Read this document to learn about suggestions for using the HP ScanJet Copy Utility.
INSTALLATION
To install the software, double click on the Software License file and read the license. If you agree with the terms, copy the file "HP ScanJet Copy Utility" to your hard disk drive.
POWER MACINTOSH
HP ScanJet Copy Utility is accelerated for the Power Macintosh. It's also compatible with Macintosh models that use the Motorola 68020, 68030 or 68040 processors.
QUICKDRAW GX
HP ScanJet Copy Utility is compatible with QuickDraw GX.
SUPPORTED SCANNERS
HP ScanJet Copy Utility works with the following models of HP ScanJet scanners: 3c, 3p, IIc, IIcx, IIp and Plus.
GETTING THE BEST COPY QUALITY
For best copy quality, turn off background printing when using QuickDraw inkjet printers. For PostScript printers it is recommended that background printing be turned on.
SENDING A MULTI-PAGE FAX
HP ScanJet Copy utility works with popular FAX modem software in extra fine or best quality mode. If you have an automatic document feeder, the easiest way to send a multi-page FAX is to load the pages into the document feeder. HP ScanJet Copy Utility will copy all of the pages before dialing the call.
If you do not have an automatic document feeder, you can still send a multi-page FAX. Hold down the option key while pressing the Copy button. After each page has been scanned, the software will ask if you have another page to copy. Load the next page on the scanner and press "Yes." When you answer "No", the software will initiate the call and then send all the pages.
NOTE: Some FAX modem software may not support grayscale. If this is the case with your software, uncheck the "Photos and grays" and "Copy in color" checkboxes to prevent blank or black pages from being sent.
MAKING THE FASTEST POSSIBLE COPIES
If your document contains only text and you want the best copy speed, uncheck all checkboxes under "Optimize quality for".
Click the More Choices button and choose "Normal" with the Exposure popup menu. Automatic exposure normally performs two scans, but manual exposure requires only one. Leave the larger window open; if you click the Fewer Choices button the program will again use Automatic exposure.
If you are using a PostScript printer, choose the HP LaserJet 8.0 driver or LaserWriter 8.0 or later. This improves copy speed over LaserWriter (7.x) and helps the program accurately determine paper sizes. Be sure to use the driver's "Setupﾉ" button and "Auto Setup" in the Chooser to select the correct PPD file.
Sometimes copies take longer if QuickDraw GX is installed. If you suspect this is the case, use the Extensions Manager control panel to turn off QuickDraw GX. Restart the computer. Use Chooser to re-select your printer and try making another copy.
AUTOMATIC EXPOSURE AND AUTOMATIC DOCUMENT FEEDERS
Automatic exposure does not work with automatic document feeders. Normal exposure is substituted.
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
I checked "Photos and grays" but grays do not appear in the copy. If you are using the LaserWriter printer driver, make sure that "Color/Grayscale" is selected under print options. If "Black & White" is selected, the printer will not reproduce shades of gray.
I'm using an HP LaserJet printer and I checked "Photos and grays" but my copies have too much contrast. The light values copy as pure white and the dark values copy as pure black. In the LaserJet print options, check to see if "Calibrated Color/Grayscale" is selected. If it is, select "Color/Grayscale" and try another copy.
I'm using a color PostScript printer and the copies come out too dark. If you are using the HP LaserJet, LaserWriter 8.0 or PSWriter printer drivers, check under print options and see if "Calibrated Color/Grayscale" is selected. If it is not, select it and try another copy. If the darkness improves but the highlights do not print as white, check to see if ColorSync is installed (see next item.)
I'm using a color PostScript printer and the highlights do not print as white. If you are using a color PostScript printer with LaserWriter 8.0 or later, the HP LaserJet driver, or the Adobe PSPrinter driver, you may want to turn off ColorSync if it is installed on your computer. If the highlights in the copy have a color cast instead of being pure white, or if a Photos and Grays copy contains color instead of just gray, turning off ColorSync may help. (If you are using QuickDraw GX, you cannot turn off ColorSync because ColorSync is required for GX to operate correctly.)
To turn off ColorSync, Open the Extensions folder located inside the System Folder on your computer's hard disk. Drag the file named "ColorSyncｪ" out of the Extensions folder. You may drop it anywhere outside of the System Folder. Finally, you must Restart your computer.
I'm using an HP inkjet printer but the color quality is poor. Check to see that the printer driver (under Page Setup) is configured to match the type of paper you are using.
If you are using HP Premium Inkjet Paper, the paper may be loaded upside down in the tray. The paper is single-sided and has a small, faint arrow printed in one corner. If the arrow appears on the same side as your copy, the paper is loaded upside-down.
When I start the HP ScanJet Copy Utility, the lamp in my scanner comes on. This is normal, and helps insure the best possible copy quality. The software will automatically turn the lamp off after 60 seconds.
